Basics

How does an electric instantaneous water heater work?

Electric instantaneous water heaters heat the water directly at the point of use. For each application (kitchen, bathroom or washbasin) there is a suitable device that is optimally suited to the requirements at the place of use. The water is heated directly as it flows through the appliance. When the tap is closed, the electric instantaneous water heater switches off again. This means that only as much water is heated as is actually used. By not storing hot water, there is no standby energy loss.

What is an air detection system in electronic instantaneous water heaters?

All electronic instantaneous water heaters are equipped with an air detection system which protects the heating element as far as possible in the event of air being trapped in the water mains. If air is detected, the device switches off for 60 seconds. On units with a display, the message "Er Lb" or "Error air bubble" appears.

What distinguishes hydraulic and electronic instantaneous water heaters?

Hydraulic instantaneous water heaters operate depending on the volume flow. This means that they switch on at a certain water flow rate via a pressure differential switch (flow switch). In doing so, they often take up the full or a fixed partial output and thus produce up to 60°C. The desired temperature can be achieved by adding cold water. If the volume flow or the flow pressure of the water changes in the house network, the water temperature also changes; if necessary, the DLE switches off completely. Electronic instantaneous water heaters adapt their power consumption to the actual conditions. They measure the inlet and outlet temperature and flow rate and switch on their power electronically. They only ever produce the temperature that has been set. For a shower at 38°C, for example, an electronic unit would only draw about 16 kW instead of the available 21 kW. Comparison of a hydraulic instantaneous water heater (left) and an electric instantaneous water heater (right).

What are the advantages of a fully electronic instantaneous water heater?

Like an electronic instantaneous water heater, a fully electronic E-flow heater regulates its power consumption based on the inlet/outlet temperature and flow rate. In addition, it also automatically limits the flow rate. At cold inlet temperatures, the flow rate is limited until the desired outlet water temperature can be kept constant. This control is via a motorized valve, which can also be set individually, e.g. for additional energy savings via a reduced flow rate.

What are the heating systems for instantaneous water heaters?

There are instantaneous water heaters with tubular heating elements and bare wire resistance heating systems. In tubular heaters, the heating coil is located in a copper tube, which then transfers the heat to the water. The heat transfer is sluggish. Due to the high mass of the heating element, there is a high heat capacity, which in turn promotes lime deposits. In modern and efficient bare wire resistance heating systems, the heating coil is located directly in the water. As a result, almost 100 er of energy is transferred directly to the water without losses. This allows a split-second response to changing parameters (inlet/outlet temperature, flow rate). In addition, the system is less susceptible to limescale deposits. The electronic power control regulates the power consumption precisely and efficiently. At CLAGE, there is only efficiency: CLAGE specializes in modern bare wire resistance instantaneous water heaters.Nachschaltstrecke = Downstream section

Do instantaneous water heaters need to be vented?

CLAGE instantaneous water heaters feature an efficient bare wire heating system. In this system, the heating coils are located directly in the water and can transfer the heat energy directly to the water. Air pockets in the water mains can cause overheating and damage to the heating coils. Therefore, after installation and after work in the water mains, the devices must be vented. Electronic instantaneous water heaters have an advanced safety system, which reduces the risk of damage due to air entrapment.

Is it possible to decalcify an instantaneous water heater?

Electric instantaneous water heaters with bare wire heating elements are considered maintenance-free and do not require descaling.

Where can I find the device filters?

The fine filter is always located in the cold water inlet. In the case of the small and compact instantaneous water heaters, directly in the cold water inlet pipe; in the case of the comfort instantaneous water heaters, in the cold water connection piece.

Can instantaneous water heaters be connected in series?

A series connection is technically not sensible, as the pressure loss is disproportionately high. If a high water volume is to be achieved, we recommend our DSX Twin system.

Why does the flow rate decrease at high temperatures?

When the instantaneous water heaters reach the power limit, the devices of the DSX and DSX Touch series automatically reduce the flow rate to such an extent that the set desired temperature is safely reached.

Can my CLAGE instantaneous water heater be installed outdoors?

Yes, but do not forget that it is an electrical unit that must be protected from the weather. Install it so that it is protected from rain, temperatures below freezing and rodents.

How can I winterize my CLAGE instantaneous water heater?

First, turn off the fuse at the distribution box. Next, turn off the water supply at the incoming water shut-off valve. Then disconnect the water line (be careful of spilled water). Our units do not self-drain, so the unit must be removed from the wall and tilted or blown out to completely remove any remaining water. Due to their compact size and ease of installation, the units can also be removed at any time and stored in another location without risk of freezing.

Keywords: Antifreeze.

How to vent an instantaneous water heater?

Here, the instantaneous water heater remains de-energized and the hot water tap and cold water tap are opened several times until the water comes out in an even stream and without air.

Why don't I have hot water with the instantaneous water heater?

If the CLAGE instantaneous water heater does not supply hot water, there are often various causes. First of all, please check whether the required electrical connection is available and the required minimum flow rate. If the unit displays an error message, please use the fault diagnostics. These are located in the hood depending on the device type.

Technology

Can multiple remote controls be used for one device?

With the DSX Touch, you can teach 3 additional remote controls in addition to the standard one. Thus, up to 4 radio remote controls are possible.

What happens at low inlet temperatures?

The instantaneous water heater may no longer be able to reach the set temperature. Throttle the water flow at the fitting to reach the set temperature.

How do instantaneous water heaters react to calciferous water?

We speak of very calcareous, hard water from 14° dH. Hard water is particularly disadvantageous when water is heated to high temperatures. High temperatures (>55°C) promote lime precipitation. E.g. in hydraulic instantaneous water heaters or storage tanks. Electronically controlled instantaneous water heaters are therefore less susceptible to limescale.

What is the maximum temperature that CLAGE instantaneous water heaters can reach?

This depends on the flow rate and the temperature of the incoming water. With a set nominal power of e.g. 21 kW, a temperature increase of ∆T = 45 K (i.e. e.g. from 10 degrees inlet temperature to 55 degrees outlet temperature) is possible at 6.7 l/min. Our top model DSX Touch also offers a thermal treatment mode that enables 70°C hygienic flushing.

M-Series

The water does not get warm enough?

The outlet temperature depends on the cold water inlet temperature and the water flow. Especially in the cold season, there is also a reduction in the inlet temperature. This also leads to a reduction of the hot water outlet temperature. This can be compensated by reducing the water flow rate (hot water valve fitting).

The device does not switch on?

With hydraulic instantaneous water heaters, a distinct clacking noise can be heard when switching on. If the unit does not switch on, the water flow may be too low, or the cold water inlet and hot water outlet may be reversed. For example, in the case of small instantaneous water heaters for under-sink installation, the cold water inlet is located on the left-hand side. Please also note the required minimum water quantities, which can be found in the operating and installation instructions.

The water temperature fluctuates?

In the case of hydraulic small instantaneous water heaters, the outlet temperature is dependent on the water quantity and inlet temperature. If there are pressure fluctuations in the water supply system, the amount of water flowing through the device will also fluctuate, and with it the outlet temperature. This is where electronically controlled instantaneous water heaters come in handy.

Can you use any fitting?

The devices of the M3..7 series are instantaneous water heaters which may only be installed with pressureless fittings. If the installation is to be carried out with a pressure-resistant fitting, it is necessary to use the pressure-resistant small instantaneous water heater type MBH3..7. Regardless of the type of installation, the fittings should have an M22i or M24a thread. Only then can the enclosed CLAGE special jet regulator be mounted in the fitting.

Can you use any aerator?

Our small instantaneous water heaters of the M series are supplied with the CLAGE special aerator CSP3 or CSP6. These should be used, as this achieves an optimal spray pattern.

Keywords: Aerator, aerifier.

Temperature LED flashing?

If the LED display of the selected temperature flashes slowly, this means that the instantaneous water heater is at its capacity limit. The set temperature cannot be reached under the given conditions, such as inlet / outlet temperature and water flow. In this case, the flow rate must be reduced.

All LEDs are flashing?

About us

Why CLAGE? Are all CLAGE instantaneous water heaters made in Germany?

In 1951 Claus-Holmer Gerdes started with the distribution of small instantaneous water heaters. Today, we are a second-generation, medium-sized, owner-managed industrial company based in the northern German Hanseatic city of Lüneburg. More than 270 employees are responsible for the development, design, production and sales of energy-efficient water heaters with high quality standards "Made in Germany". CLAGE is the innovative specialist for energy-saving water heaters. These include, for example, E-small instantaneous water heaters for hand basins (3 to 9kW), E-compact instantaneous water heaters for kitchen sinks (11 to 13kW) and E-comfort instantaneous water heaters for showers and baths (18 to 27kW). In addition, CLAGE distributes drinking water systems and storage tanks.

Environment

What contribution do instantaneous electric water heaters make to climate protection?

Electric instantaneous water heaters produce only the hot water that is actually needed. Standby energy losses and high temperatures are thus avoided and less energy is consumed. Modern electric instantaneous water heaters use electricity, which is becoming an increasingly green energy source thanks to the expansion of renewable energies. As a result,CO2 emissions for one kilowatt hour of electricity will also fall in the future. Anyone who opts for electric domestic heating technology today will become increasingly climate-neutral. Anyone who wants to make their building climate-neutral today can also opt for a green electricity contract. It's so easy to make your daily shower climate-neutral!

How much saving does the ECO mode bring?

An "ECO mode" can be set for the DSX Touch electric comfort instant water heater. This limits the flow rate to 8 l/min and stores the usual energy-saving user temperatures for the individual applications, e.g. 38°C for showering. Compared to 9 l/min at 40°C, an additional 17% can be saved here.

Efficient use

What hot water temperatures are needed?

In central systems, the water is usually heated to temperatures above 65°C and stored. This is not necessary with electric instantaneous water heaters. In fact, the water is only used at lower temperatures. If the water is heated only as high as it is needed, energy and costs can be saved.

What are the advantages of decentralized hot water supply via instantaneous water heaters?

In decentralized systems, hot water is separated from the heating. Electric instantaneous water heaters are installed directly at the tapping points and are designed to meet the requirements. The hot water is available without any lead times. Only as much water is heated as is needed. Additional piping systems are not required. In addition, no circulation pumps and hot water tanks are required, and investment and operating costs are saved. The heating system can now be designed precisely to meet the building's heating requirements and can be switched off completely in summer. Circulation and storage losses are eliminated because water is not preheated and stored in large quantities. Compared to central systems, approx. 40nergie can be saved here!Centralized or decentralized?

How do I use electric instantaneous water heaters efficiently?

Electronic instantaneous water heaters adjust their power consumption and thus their energy consumption to the prevailing conditions. They measure the inlet/outlet temperature and flow rate and only consume as much energy as is actually necessary. The lower the temperature set on the device, the lower the energy consumption. So it makes sense to set its individual useful temperature directly on the device or by remote control before each use. Control panel of the DSX Touch

What is the average hot water demand?

Of course, the need for hot water depends on individual comfort needs: Some of us bathe regularly, others prefer the short shower. On average, hot water demand is around 400 kWh per person per year. That is about 40 l per day (40°C) (VDI 2067).

Why should I set my useful temperature to the nearest degree?

The first reason is to save energy and water. Whenever I save mixing cold water it is most efficient.

The second reason is to avoid unwanted temperature fluctuations. If an electric instantaneous water heater supplies the whole apartment or a bathroom with washbasin and shower, it is advisable to set the temperature at the same time as it is comfortable for you in the shower. If during the shower a second person taps water at the washbasin, only the amount of water under the shower would change, but not the temperature. For example, if you always set the unit to 50°C, you would have to add cold water to the shower to achieve the normal 38-40°C shower temperature. Now if someone taps on a different faucet, the mixing ratios on the shower change and temperature changes can occur.

What do I do if the set temperature is not reached?

An electric instantaneous water heater has a maximum heating capacity (kW specification of the device). With this heating capacity, the cold water can now be physically heated. The CLAGE E instantaneous water heaters are adjusted to the specified output values at the factory at a water pressure of 3 bar and an inlet temperature of 15°C. The maximum heat output of an E instantaneous water heater is the same as that of a small instantaneous water heater. E.g. for an E- small instantaneous water heater as follows. 3, 5kW output. Adjustment of 2l/min flow at 3 bar water pressure with a temperature change of 25K (this would result in an outlet temperature of approx. 40°C at 15°C inlet temperature). If the water pressure should now be higher than 3 bar, for example, more water (more than 2l/min) will be forced through the device. Thus, the heating power of 3.5kW can no longer raise this higher water volume by 25K. Consequently, the outlet temperature decreases. A remedy is: throttle the water quantity to the water quantity specified in the data sheet or reduce the water quantity at the draw-off fitting.

What is the cost of showering with an instantaneous water heater?

Since instantaneous electric water heaters do not generate standby energy losses, energy costs can be quickly estimated based on hot water consumption. The average hot water demand is 400 kWh per person per year. At an electricity price of 30 cents/kWh, this results in total costs of €10/month.

Calculation:
40 l/ person and day
330 days of use
12°C inlet temperature
38°Coutlet temperature
26K Temperature difference

Q= m * c * Delta T
Q= 40 kg* 330 days *1.163 Wh/kg*K *26K
Q= 400 kWh

What is a climate-neutral building?

A building is climate-neutral if it does not influence the climate through its operation, i.e. no greenhouse gases are emitted or these are fully compensated for.

What contribution can a decentralised hot water supply make?

E-instant water heaters make their contribution to the energy transition through energy efficiency. Only the warm water that is actually needed is produced. It couldn’t be more efficient! The devices are small and can be installed close to consumption. Depending on your needs, an electric water heater supplies the bathroom, for example, and another device the remote kitchen sink. The temperature is selected individually to the degree by remote control or voice control.

Since the heating is no longer required for the hot water supply, it can be designed smaller and only needs to provide low flow temperatures. And instead of a solar thermal system for heating and hot water, a photovoltaic system for electricity generation can be better installed on the roof. Because electricity is always needed.

Is electricity as an energy source climate-friendly?

The energy consumed is becoming increasingly renewable due to the rising share of renewable energies in the electricity mix. Did you know that almost half of this has already been achieved? If you want to be climate-neutral ahead of time, you can switch directly to a green electricity contract. Those who already rely on electricity as an energy source make themselves less dependent on fossil fuels and their building almost climate-neutral by 2045. The electric instant water heaters from CLAGE are also produced with green electricity!

Which electric instantaneous water heater fits which tap?

Electric instantaneous water heaters are installed directly at the respective tapping points. There is a device for every application: a small instantaneous water heater is suitable for the individual hand wash basin supply, at CLAGE the M series. Small instantaneous water heaters produce approx. 38°C hot water and are available from 3.5 - 6.5 kW. At the kitchen sink it may be sometimes higher temperatures. Compact instantaneous water heaters (C series) with 11 or 13.5 kW produce around 5 l/min of hot water between 20 and 60°C. In the bathroom, the sink, shower and bathtub are usually supplied by a comfort instantaneous water heater. The DX series from CLAGE is available in 18-27 kW.Advantages of instantaneous water heaters: Short hot water lines (red lines in the graphic) + correct water quantity + correct water temperature = little energy losses

Which electric instantaneous water heater can I use for reheating?

Units approved for inlet temperatures up to 70°C:
E- Small instantaneous water heater series MCX 3-7
E- Compact instantaneous water heaters CEX / CEX-U / CFX-U
E-comfort instantaneous water heaters DSX Touch, DEX Next, DSX Touch Twin

Basically, the question must be asked whether it is not more efficient to disconnect the corresponding tap from the central system. Example: In the kitchen, it takes a long time for the hot water to arrive from the central storage tank. Since hot water is used sporadically at the kitchen sink, it makes sense to supply this tap completely via an electric compact instantaneous water heater and to avoid energy losses.

Hygienic requirements must always be observed when reheating. When storing hot water, temperatures above 55°C should be maintained regularly to reduce the risk of legionella formation. To keep water at a lower temperature level in order to reheat it electrically, hygienic separation must take place.

Keywords: Solar thermal, solar compatible.

Which CLAGE devices (electric instantaneous water heaters) have an anti-scald function?

An electronic temperature limit can be set directly on the unit via the following CLAGE models:
MCX 3 to MCX 7
CEX series
CFX series
DSX Touch
DEX Next

The outlet temperature then never rises above the set temperature, so that scald protection can be guaranteed for sensitive areas.

What alternative do I have to the 5-liter storage tank at the kitchen sink?

The first choice: E-comfort instantaneous water heater CFX-U. The CFX-U is specially designed for the requirements at the kitchen sink. Like the electric range, it requires a 400-volt electrical connection. This can be installed in the kitchen by your electrician.

If it is not possible to install a 400 volt connection, it is possible to work via a load shedding box. Via the LAB, the stove (400 V 3x16 A) located next to the sink and CFX-U are connected together. If water is tapped, the stove is thrown off. Attention: This is only possible with electromechanical stoves!

Can I include a small instantaneous water heater for the kitchenette?

The first choice for supplying a tea kitchen are E-compact instantaneous water heaters. In some circumstances, an E-small instantaneous water heater can also be used if high temperatures and water volumes are not required. E-small instantaneous water heaters produce 2-3.7 l/min at up to 45°C. If the use of an E-compact instantaneous water heater is not possible, an MCX 7 E-small instantaneous water heater with 6.5 kW should be planned in any case. E-small instantaneous water heaters with plug (3.5 kW) are not suitable! MCX 7 with fixed connection

What should be considered regarding simultaneity (current)?

Electric instantaneous water heaters are short-duration consumers. This means that the devices do not all run at full power consumption at the same time. In residential construction, DIN 18015 can be used as a guide. This specifies simultaneity factors depending on the number of residential units. Our team will be happy to assist you here. In the commercial sector, the actual use must be considered.

Which heating system is recommended as a supplement to hot water preparation via electric instantaneous water heater?

Those who separate heating and hot water production have the option of using a smaller heating system. Electric home heating technology is a suitable supplement to the electric instantaneous water heater. The use of heat pumps that use electricity to generate heat is recommended. The lower the temperatures, the more efficient the system. In new construction or renovation with low flow temperatures, heat pump systems for heating run very efficiently. If you are thinking of building a passive house, you may well consider direct electric heating systems, such as radiant heating. Example: Supply of a single-family house with a heat pump in combination with underfloor heating and hot water supply with instantaneous water heaters

What criteria should I look for when choosing a faucet?

For electric instantaneous water heaters, always select fittings that do not have automatic cold water mixing. The instantaneous water heater regulates the temperature precisely to the degree, so fittings with additional regulation are counterproductive. Especially in the area of non-contact taps or thermostats, the use of hot water blocks that automatically add cold water is increasing. So it's best to plan for CLAGE faucets or single-lever mixers.

The CLAGE E-small instant water heaters have a special feature: A special aerator is included in the scope of delivery, which conjures up a great spray pattern at a low flow rate. To use the aerator, an M22/24 outlet is required.

Your CLAGE contact person will be happy to answer any questions you may have about E instant water heaters and the choice of fittings.

Are thermostatic mixer taps compatible?

For electric instantaneous water heaters, always select fittings that do not have automatic cold water admixture.

Why is it useful to install instantaneous electric water heaters as close to the tap as possible?

Even with a 10 meter long pipe path, 3.2 liters of water run unused down the drain every time you wait for hot water. With a decentralized hot water supply, you avoid unnecessarily long water paths and thus save water costs or the considerable heat losses of hot water circulation.Line lengths and water loss ("lange Leitung" und "Wasserverlust")

I need a solution for my wellness shower. Which device is suitable for 20 l/min?

DSX Touch Twin with hot water output up to 25 l/min.

Which items can I include in a water management system or activate for sanitary flushing?

MBX 3 Lumino and MBX 7 Lumino and all CLAGE sensor faucets: EKE kitchen faucet, AEN, AEB, AEB-C, AEN-C basin faucets.

Can CLAGE instantaneous water heaters be used for both commercial and residential applications?

Yes, CLAGE instantaneous water heaters are ideal for commercial and residential applications. We also offer special system solutions with optimal fitting as a set solution.

What do I have to look out for in new construction and renovation?

For a climate-neutral building stock in 2045, fossil fuels such as oil and gas should be avoided and energy losses should be reduced to a minimum. Electrical house heating technology is suitable for this, such as the combination of a small heat pump for low heating requirements and electric instant water heaters for hot water supply without losses.

Does the house connection have to be specially adapted for instantaneous water heaters?

In general, the modern house connection is suitable for the use of electric instantaneous water heaters. Nevertheless, the design of the house connection should also be checked, for example, with regard to the use of electric heat pumps and the charging time of e-cars. Modern electric instantaneous water heaters are only used for a short time and therefore have only a low simultaneity factor.

Installation

What is the difference between a non-pressurized and a pressurized installation?

The pressureless (open) installation comes from the field of small pressureless storage tanks, whose expansion water can escape through the fitting. The pressureless installation is only possible with a fitting for pressureless water heaters. Our M-series small pressureless electric instantaneous water heaters are very quick and easy to install and are particularly inexpensive. Due to their design, they are installed with standard low-pressure fittings. Hot water is available with little installation effort. On the other hand, in the case of pressure-resistant installation, suitable for one or more taps, all types of fittings can be used. Storage tanks are operated with an additional safety group. Our MBH and MCX series electric instantaneous water heaters are approved for both non-pressurized (open) and pressurized (closed) installation. The connection set (T-piece and flexible pressure hose) included in the scope of delivery facilitates the retrofitting of existing pressure fittings.Unpressurized installation (left) and pressurized installation (right).

May electric instantaneous water heaters be installed in protection zone 1?

E instantaneous water heaters with protection class IP 25 may be installed in protection area 1, i.e. directly in the shower or above the bathtub. At CLAGE, this applies to all E-comfort instantaneous water heaters and the shower system MBX Shower.

Are instantaneous electric water heaters allowed to be mounted on the side?

Whenever possible, electric instantaneous water heaters should be installed vertically. If this is not possible for space reasons, your CLAGE contact will be happy to inform you about other installation options. Transverse installation is possible with the E-comfort instant water heaters (from 2015 only DX series). Transverse installation is only permitted with the water connections pointing to the left. For transverse installation in a back-wall installation, a maximum cold water temperature of 25 °C is permissible.Your CLAGE consultant will tell you whether an instantaneous water heater can be installed transversely or horizontally.

Do I have to connect the small instantaneous water heater M pressureless or pressure-tight?

The M electric instantaneous water heater is a pressureless hot water device. Pressureless devices may only be connected without pressure. Therefore, it requires a special low-pressure fitting. Unpressurized installation on the E-small instantaneous water heater M.

Which small instantaneous water heaters can I connect pressure-tight?

Pressure-resistant small instantaneous water heaters such as the MBH and the MCX can be connected both pressureless and pressure-resistant. The scope of delivery includes the T-piece and a flexible connection hose. Flameproof installation on MBH and MCX electric instantaneous water heaters.

Where can the devices be registered?

When do I need the RDX mounting frame or the VDX and UDX mounting kit?

With the help of this mounting frame, the DX series units can be mounted if the electrical connection comes out of the wall at any position under the unit or if the line is surface-mounted. In addition, the DX series units can be mounted using the VDX mounting kit if the water connections come out of the wall under the unit in an offset or reversed position or if they lead to the unit on the side of the wall. In addition, the DX series units can be mounted with the UDX mounting kit if the water connections end above the unit.

I still have an electric water heater. What work is necessary to switch to a modern electric instantaneous water heater?

In the case of wall-mounted storage heaters, the water connection in the wall normally fits. Only the water connection elements of the E-comfort instantaneous water heater must be installed. The electrical connection usually has to be re-routed. Your electrical specialist will certainly be happy to advise you here.

Maintenance

Do instantaneous water heaters require maintenance?

Maintenance as compared to the heating system is not necessary. We recommend checking the filters, water connections and electrical connection every 2-3 years. This also includes cleaning the outlet devices. Likewise, the filter screen located in the inlet is also cleaned or replaced.
